We are just about into September. I saw a Fall-run King Salmon the other day on the Lower Sacramento, just outside of Redding, Ca. Expect spawning Salmon in early October. River conditions near Redding on the Lower Sacramento are excellent. Wade fisher-people will soon have safe flows, allowing access to some of the Sac's best riffles. Cooler night time temperatures on the Pit will produce hatches of isonychia (basically a #10 rubber legs). The upper Sacramento is in excellent shape. Evening baetis and some morning caddis stir the fish in the upper Sac. The McCloud below McCloud reservoir all the way through the Nature Conservancy is a great choice at this time of year. Cool water is nice to stand in when daytime temps get above 90f. I have heard Hat Creek has been good at the PH #2 riffle, with few if any anglers. Small #20 midge on Hat Creek was a good fly a couple days ago.
The Pit River has some road closures. See my Pit River Page for more info.
