The tip of a fin above the water, a roll of a back, an elusive sight. Big rainbows feast on PMD’s on Fall River everyday. And when conditions are just right, the best of the best move to shallow, discrete water to savor the purest form of the may fly, a dun. The sight of rainbow trout rolling, inhaling the rivers bounty is something I hope and strive for. For two days, cloudy rainy weather has produced what Fall River is all about. Dry fly fishing, 6x and long casts. Fall river is a love hate relationship for me. I see deserving anglers struggle more on this river than any other. Yet, this slender, gentle, sumptuous body of water will let down her guard and engage us in way we only dream of, on her own time. So, this past week has reminded me of why I enjoy this river named Fall.
In the coming days, the hex fly will emerge providing more of what the fly angler strives for. It’s summer time. Those classic evenings I enjoy, spent on the water with friends is a week away. Bring your favorite 5 wt. Some 5X leaders, Hex duns, a bottle of your favorite and enjoy one of fishing’s finest events. Cheers! I hope you to see you!
